FORD: "where quality is job one???"

Let me refresh y'alls memory. When my 2007 Ford E-250 van had about 5,230 miles on it, I took it in to Lilliston Ford in Kingsland for the 5,000 mile "check up" and oil change. I also noted that it had a check engine light burning. Lilliston changed the oil, rotated the tires, and diagnosed the problem as a bad EGR valve which they did not have in stock. They got it overnight and installed it the next day. When I drove out of the dealership, the check engine light was off. I drove straight home and parked it. The next morning, I cranked it and the check engine light came back on. I took it back. Diagnosis: bad catalytic converter - at just over 5,000 miles?????????? They ordered one. I drove it down there yesterday afternoon and left it over night so that it would be cool in the morning. Well, about 30 minutes ago, Dan, the service manager, called. The good news is that they put the new catalytic converter on. The bad news is that the light was still on. The even worse news is that further diagnostics revealed that the reason the catalytic converter went bad is that the computer has gone bad and was causing raw gas to be dumped into the exhaust system and burning up the catalytic converter. Now I understand why the thing has been eating me alive on gasoline, but has exceptional pick-up. Hell, I've been on afterburner since I got it! Just another example of why I've heretofore owned foreign cars for the last 40 years. If you have to have a Ford (as I had no choice in what brand the insurer bought for me), Lilliston seems an okay dealership so far. Would I buy a Ford on my own - at least an E-250? I don't think so. Has anyone else out there ever had similar problems with Ford E or F series vans and trucks?

  1. Just in case that is not the problem for the engine light staying on, check your gas cap. I had a truck that was in and out of the shop many times for the same reason and it turned out that the gas cap had to be put on and then turned until it clicked and the check engine light went off. So much for FORD!

  2. Someone warned me of that before and I've been careful to tell attendants who fill me up ever since. Thanks, but I don't think that's it. I suspect that it came from the factory with a bad "brain" which cascaded into the other problems.

  3. I have owned Fords for over 20 years and have only had a one problem, the tires wear out.(lol)

Please keep it clean and reasonably civil. "Public figures" are fair game, consistent with the "actual malice" exception. I suggest you Google both terms before you go off half-cocked.
