West Savannah three years into a successful revitalization plan.
Picture, if you will, the houses in the photo lining Osborne north of St.Marys city hall and south of the old mill site. Perhaps in the north west part of Kingsland, as well.

Looks great but...it attracts younger working people. St. Marys and company only want retirees here. West Savannah is doing things for the children and teenagers. St. Marys and county would rather not have those pesky kids around. Sorry, this would never fly here. We are a retirement community with no interest in attracting jobs, businesses or industry much less younger working people. Developers, yes but real jobs, no.
Its a pretty picture and it sure would add to St. Marys. But, it's not gonna happen. At least not while the Osprey Cove/anti downtown crowd is in control. Besides, we would probably have to use eminent domain procedures to get that property away from the pesky small businesses that are just hanging onto it until they go bankrupt.
I can well understand the genesis of the sentiments in both comments. However, I would take issue with the comment that the O.C. folks are against downtown revitalization. Actually, I believe you have it bass ackwards. I would encourage you to read the comments of Roger Rillo on his campaign blog (see my list of links to blogs, right hand mnargin of blog) when I suggested that all the buildings fronting on Osborne from city hall north to the old mill site should be demolished and replaced with structures similar to those in the Savannah story (the obvious exceptions being the new school and Dr. Jones' new building).
