CountyCommission Chairman Ron Ham said the delay has had little effect on the county's bid to lure new industry.
"I don't think it has hurt," he said. "I think the companies that are interested in coming here see us working to lengthen and light the runway. It is an asset that is critical to the development authority's effort to bring jobs to Brantley County."
Gibson said the improved airport should have a very positive effect on the economic health of the rural county.
"It will be a 24/7 facility and won't shut down at night like it used to," she said. "It will be a facility that will be more useful to more airplanes more of the time. We are hoping for an economic impact that will be significant and will ... improve our tax base."

St. Marys already has an airport but wants to give it away.
