Poll results

Our "polls" just closed a few minutes ago. You can still see the results to the right. Here's my take on the results. For Tax Commissioner, with 73 voting, incumbent Beth Soles got 54 % of the vote. Pat Smith was her closest competitor with 31%. It looks like a win for soles. For Clerk of Superior Court, with 72 voting, Tina Murray garnered 61% of the vote. The incumbent was already weakened by the suspicion, founded or not, that she was complicit in the stacking of the recent grand jury with arch-Thuggies. I believe she shot herself in the head when she fired Murray. I predict this one goes easily to Murray. For County Commmission, District 1, Preston Rhodes is a goner. With 60 voting, Willis Keene, Jr. garnered 41%, while Craig Brack pulled 33%. That could easily tighten up considerably between now and July 15th. Too close to call. In District 3, with 65 votes, Commissioner Berry will keep his seat with 64% of the vote. In District 5, with 68 voting, former county commissioner Harry Callahan garned 61% of the votes. It will probably tighten a little, but I predict that the anti-good ol' boy incumbent fervor, per se, coupled with his flagrant support of all things BTW will finish Rainer for good. Lastly, with 70 voting, in the sheriff's race, Tommy Gregory pulled in 78% vs. BTW's paltry 21 %. I'm a little reluctant to say this for fear that some will not get to the polls or get their butts registered and to the polls due to overconfidence. However, assuming every body stays fired up, and shows up, I really do think that we will finally rid ourselves of Big Thug Willie for good on July 15th. Update: 5/10 @ 1641 HRS: Thanks to the reader who reminded me that it turns out that the race for county coroner is also contested. St. Marys attorney John Meyers is challenging incumbent L.W. Bruce. I have just posted a poll for that race (top right).

I noticed in the T&G on Wednesday that John Myers was running against L.W.Bruce for Coroner. Is that John Myers, the attorney or some other John Myers? Do you happen to know Jay?

Yes, in fact, it is John Myers, the attorney. The day that qualifying closed, I called up to Judge Gillete's office around 3:00 P.M.- three hours after the deadline - and the lady who read off the list of qualifiers omitted John Myers name. No doubt just an oversight.

That's why I did not include the coroner's race in the poll, but I'll fix that right now.

Also the paper said that qualifying closed at 5PM that day and like you I thought it was noon.
