We should all start a email campaign to the City of Woodbine to appoint a new board member 6-30-09. That would be a first step towards breaking up this monopoly.
Good idea. That's exactly what I had in mind when I suggested hanging the list of term expirations on the refrigerator. Now, do any of y'all know a good candidate who lives in Woodbine?
I would recommend Rueben Gomez. Very knowledgeable guy. He would be perfect for this position. He also has excellent thoughts on expanding the workforce of Camden County.
It would be very interesting to have a posting of the accounts held by the JDA board members (including blind trust). The more I talk to people about this situation the more disturbing things become. I do believe we have the biggest white collar crime ever being committed here in Camden County.
This STUFF is novel material!!
But I guess that will never happen. Because the person also said the Board members are protected. There is some type of rule that states if you serve on the board you cannot be held accountable for a crime.
Man this is SWEET..... What an amazing concept. Basically because this group isn't elected by the people, they are not held accountable to the people of Camden County. Therefore whatever they do is lawful with no repercussions.
How could anyone (BOC) agree to such terms? Why would anyone (BOC) agree to such term? Is this the reason why the BOC can't hold the JDA accountable for their lackluster performance?
Well now that I think about it, this is exactly what the JDA Attorney told them in the meeting.
So I guess the true question is....
If the JDA isn't accountable to ANYONE. Why would they be allowed to go into the water and sewer business, collect fees from developers as the County version of Impact Fees and receive funding from the taxpayers to do all of this?
Point one: I agree wholeheartedly on Ruben Gomez - very knowledgeable, very intelligent, and a real sparkplu. Does he live in Woodbine?
Point two: The conceot you are aluding tweo is called sovereign immunity. Not sure whetrher or not that extends top board members of an independent agency creatdd bu a legislative act. Anyone - i.e. an attorney - know the answer.
MISfeasance, of which there has been plenty, is, by definition, not a crime. Have tghere been decisons made by board ,members based upon their best interests rather than those of the citizenry at large? Provbably, but they most likely do not rise to the level of criminality. For instnace, would a State Farm agent rather see 5 new businesses or 5,000 new homes? Would a utility exec lake to see 5 new busnesses or 5,000 nesw homes? You get the idea.
Why did they seek to get into water and sewer. Because perennial chairman, St. David Rainer, at the head of thje Terrible Troik, asked them to as a favor to his builder buddies. It gave the appearnce of holding their feet to the fire (remember the "negotiated" [by the JDA] $7,000 per unit bulding fee which was an unenforceable, unlawful exaction from the git go?)It was a way to stave off commisiioner feller's push for real impact fees. And nwo that we have real imnpact fees - and no more Commissioner Feler - they are a laughably low gift to St. David's GOB buddies.
This is the first time I have read your blog and I have a few questions. Without reading all of your past comments, I am curious what have you done as a citizen of Camden County to encourage "big business" to move to our county? Have you volunteered your services to assist the JDA? Like I said I haven't had the time "yet" to review your previous posts, so if you would like to refer me to a few that would answer my questions that would be great.
When you HAVE read all of my entries, head on down to the Tribune and Georgian and tell them you want to buy back copies of all their editions with my letters to the editor and articles about me since 1993. Make sure your trunk is empty. Then do the same with the Georgia Times Union. Then get back to me. And by the way, who in the hell are you?
I apologize if you felt you were being attacked, like I said previously I just recently started to take a closer look at the JDA situation. I am one of the small businesses you have spoken about in one of your letters to the editor and was wanted to know a little more about your personal actions with the JDA. So if there is any way that you could possibly summarize your personal actions to halp the JDA or other businesses in this area it would be a huge help. I am not trying to attack you just try to understand a little more as to the actions of those who are concerned about the JDA and the future of Camden County.
I take it that I wrote about a type or class of business yours falls into trahter than your specifically because the T&G does not print mentions of businesses by name. I further deduce that you have a business in downtown St. Marys where, I have often opined - and still do without apology - that the prevailing attitude of the DMA members is that the rest of us - the other 99.99% of us - took them to raise. I've paid property taxes indirectly and now, directly, as a homeowner (yes, renters pay their share of property taxes via the landlord)in St.Marys since 1993. As a tapaying citizen, I have no moral, ethical, or legal obligation to make any shopping decisions that are not in my best financial interests. I shop almost exclusively in St. Marys because I would have to drive nbearly 100 miles (round trip) to shop elsewhere, not out of any sense of obligation to local merchants. Thats the way our system works. Moreover, as a citizen, I draw no compensation as an elected official, much less a JDA director.I have no obligation to persoanlly DO anything to bring businesses to Camden County. No ordinary citizen does. However, if paid county commissioners are going to authorize expenditures of taxpayer dollars for the ostensible purpose of attracting businesses, then tolerates - if not actively encourages behind the scenes - the board and director of the JDA to do no such thing and, in fact, to piss away tens of millions of dollars - some of which I paid - then you had better believe I can, should, and will have plenty to say about it.
And another thing - to the extent that my writings on a widely read forum light a fire under the BOC and JDA, either directly, or indirectly through encouraging others to voice their dissatisfaction with their performance, and, as an eventual result, they see the light and shape up, then I will have done a good bit to help bring new businesses to Camden.
Nothing. That should answer your question about what Jay has one to help the JDA, or any other organization in the county. Talk and write about his explicit, and sometimes intelligent ideas, is all he has done. No action, just words. But since this blog is edited by the author, you will never see this post, and I will be blasted away by Jay as some young punk "thuggie" that doesnt know anything if he does post this.
But I do agree with his last posts about our taxpayers money and how it shouldn't be wasted by an organization that refuses to be held accountable for producing nothing and still depend on our funding to pay them for it. I should have read the whole post before responding. Sorry
First of all I doubt very seriously that it is your (small business owner) first time reading Camden Commentary.
Secondly, I will speak as an avid reader of Camden Commentary. Jay Moreno is NOT an elected official, he does NOT serve on the JDA board, but he has ignited a much needed conversation about a worthless, money sucking JDA.
Therefore if you sincerely have questions about what the JDA has or will do please feel free to write a letter to the JDA board or better yet just address the board that you currently sit on.......
one way we can do something now is to write letters to the members and keep writing till they get the idea. in my meetings with them i have found that they rubber stamp the director and the boc. now that the director is being replaced the question is will anything change. the members are very important people. they do not like bad publicity. 2 of them are bankers and one is a partner in a big accounting firm. they might not like negative publicity that nanes names.
Does anyone know how to get in contact with Ruben Gomez. I know that he lives in Woodbine. I would like to know if he is interested in serving on the JDA. Because I will most definitely like to send a letter of recommendation on his behalf.
