St. Marys mulls yet another revision of alcohol ordinance.

http://jacksonville.com/news/georgia/2009-10-28/story/st_marys_alcohol_rules_get_a_review Could someone explain to me what the rationale for these arbitrary distances actually is?

State law dictates minimums. The Municipalities can make them stricter. The state says from entrance to entrance. Deb Hase wants as the crow flies. She is not helping businesses.

iuf you think about it from a measurement and enforcement perspective, doesn't line of sight or as-the-crow-flies make more sense. That way, tghe actual distances are the same for all applicants. An "as a person would walk it" measurement is too nebulosu and certainly would not produce the same distances for all applicants.

Now, can someone explain the rationale. What, for instance, would happen if a liquor store were 100 feet from a church rather than 500? Would the entire congregation be seduced into alcoholism or what?

That is the point. The presence of alcohol in the vicinity does not make anyone partake. I go to church and I drink. I am an adult and I make the choice. I can see a church from my favorite restaurant where I have wine with dinner. The church is not open when I am there

I would think the churchs would want them closer. Maybe the reverse would work. Not sure of the logic myself, since most churches are open only Sundays, and the liquor stores are closed.

What a waste of time for the city leaders. i'm sure from what I read in the papers and elsewhere, they have many more pressing things than where to put an establishment that sells alcohol. If someone wants a drink, they don't care how far they have to go to get what they want.

If all those yapping about the ordinace were to stop drinking the businesses whould flop. All this just makes me thristy for a beer. Plus all that singing makes lots of others thirsty. As to the distance between churches and the booze places the answer is obivious. You would not have to walk as far. What is hard to understand that?

My work is never done. Okay, J.D.S. sufferers. Let's try this one more time. The apartments going up behind my hosue are NOT HUD Section 8 subsidized housing for low income renters. They are, in fact, going to be rented to any qualified renter who has the credit rating and the income to pay full market rates. I know because I have personally corresponded with and spoken to the developer.

As far as the effect on the market value of my hosue, I really don't care as I plan to live here for the rest of my life. Hell, it may even lower my taxes! Of course, in 4 more years, they'll be of no consequence anyway.
