Gleaned from Topix Kingsland. Brantley Native Saint Marys, GA Reply » Report Abuse Judge it! #1 2 hrs ago On Friday Deputy Brannen wrecked one of the newly acquired towed vehicles (one use to pull one of the two had to have Contender boats) with a county trailer.Deputy Brennen and Deputy Barber was picking up a golf cart personally owned by Deputy Barber in Brantley County when the unsecured golf cart fell off the trailer and was serverly damaged.Upon seeing the golf cart fall off the trailer Deputy Brennen forgetting he was pulling a trailer whipped the county truck around on Hwy 110 causing the truck and trailer to jack-knife damaging both county truck and trailer. This accident had to be worked by Georgia State Patrol. Why are we Camden deputies in Brantley on personal business?

Well, when you see the boss:
1. Drive a county car and burn county gas all over the country,
2. Give some inmates for jet ski time ( likely as a reward for whatever work they did on the crooked river property ) which wind up costing the taxpayers almost $30,00.00 for the medical bills for Anthony Van Lewis,
3. Use inmates to work on your property, your ex-wife's property, girlfriend's property, Cumberland Island, etc.,
4. Illegally spend seized assets to "buy" votes,
5. Illegally give seized assets to county inmates,
6. Have a deputy and an inmate go to South Carolina to pick up a vintage car for the 4th of July parade and then return it,
7. Use county boat to go to Cumberland for the weekend,
8. Use an inmate for your son's caregiver and make sure he does not go to the state system until it is reported in the GTU,
9. Drive over to the prison with Deputy Byerly to pick up the inmate when he is released from prison,
10. Have Deputy Byerly fill out and complete all necessary paperwork seeking warrants for Stein, Jackson and Viola,
11. Have Deputy Mercer bring Dr. Jenkins to the boat ramp, pick him up and have Deputy Byerly accompany him to the Magistate Court to sign the pre-warrant paperwork,
11. Get 2 lawyers to "represent" Dr. Jenkins at the hearing,
12. Etc, etc, etc ...........

Now why in the world would a couple of deputies think that there would be anything wrong with a quick trip to Nahunta ?????????

The hog farmer must go!

Since Dr. Jenkins has been mentioned, don't forget that for more than 15 years there have been at least 3 court orders on file at the CCSO for his arrest. Looks like another violation, of the oath of office by BTW, but that's just another day at the Ponderosa.

I agree, Smith must go.

Monkey see monkey do. The boys are just following the policy of the Department. Do as you please, just try not to get caught. They should have no worry. Seems our Sheriff can find no wrong doing with all the wrong doing.

t.V. Camden played the candidates' debate over and over this weekend.

Remeber when BTW was asked for what he looks for when he's hiring a deputy?

Here's a suggestion: How about a deputy with the common sense to know that if he is empowered to write people tickets for hauling an unsecured and unsafe load, the same law also applies to him when he is towing a load on a trailer.

Imagine the litigation - not to mention the tragedy - if that golf cart had bounced right up into someone's windshield and taken out an entire family.

Just wondering if Kevin's golf cart will be repaired at the expense of the County, since the story now is they were going to use the cart for riding around the rodeo grounds. What happened to the four wheelers thay had and used to keep at Charlie's??? Heard there was approximately $3500damage to the truck alone. If this becomes an insurance claim, the sheriff may have another dented fender on his personal vechile that he may want thrown in to be repaired also. Right Billy????

Oh, no doubt about it!

Cart accident questioned

Click-2-Listen

No ticket for deputy, but issues raised

By Gordon Jackson, The Times-Union

WOODBINE - A Camden County sheriff's deputy was involved in a single-vehicle accident Friday when a golf cart fell from a trailer he was pulling as he tried to navigate a curve on Georgia 110 in Brantley County.

Deputy Jerald Brannen was not ticketed in the accident, according to a report issued by the Georgia State Patrol, which investigated the accident.

The EZ-GO golf cart that fell from the trailer is owned by Kevin Barber, another Camden County deputy, who was in the vehicle at the time of the 3:37 p.m. accident, the report said.

After the cart tumbled off the trailer, investigators said the 2008 Ford F-250 pickup and trailer - both owned by the county -were damaged when Brannen stopped, reversed direction and jackknifed the trailer into the driver's side of the vehicle. The rear quarter panel and bumper of the truck were damaged, the report says.

Lt. William Terrell, a sheriff's spokesman, said in a written response to questions by the Times-Union that the two deputies were on duty and were picking up a "privately owned golf cart" to provide security for a rodeo in Woodbine.

No disciplinary action is planned because the golf cart was secured on the cart and the strap tying down the vehicle to the trailer apparently came loose, resulting in the accident, Terrell said.

Col. Charlie Easterling authorized the deputies to use the truck and trailer to pick up the golf cart, Terrell said.

But County Commissioner Steve Berry questioned some of Terrell's responses. Berry said County Administrator Steve Howard checked payroll records and found Brannen was off work Friday. Barber worked eight hours, but it's unclear when his shift ended.

Berry said he believes both deputies were off duty at the time they were driving the county vehicle.

"The issue you have here is two off-duty deputies driving a county vehicle on county gas and county insurance going to get one of the deputy's golf carts," Berry said. "Now we have a wrecked vehicle. Why couldn't they use their own truck?"

If an on-duty deputy had been in an accident involving a county vehicle, commissioners would have been immediately notified, Berry said. But as of late Monday afternoon, Berry said nobody at the commission offices was contacted about the accident.

Berry questioned what possible reason the Sheriff's Office would have to bring a deputy's personal golf cart into the county using a county vehicle and trailer. He also questioned why the golf cart was not secured properly on the trailer.

"Common sense would be to strap the thing down," he said.

Berry compared Friday's incident to a personal watercraft accident that happened in November 2006. Sheriff's officials refused to answer specific questions about that accident, where an inmate was hospitalized after he crashed a watercraft into a dock.

The only response from Sheriff Bill Smith at the time of the accident was that he took full responsibility. Witnesses said three jail inmates were on the Satilla River with no supervision, but Smith never explained why.

Commissioner Katherine Zell questioned the need for the Sheriff's Office to use a golf cart, if indeed the intent was to use the vehicle for security at the rodeo.

If the intent was to use the cart for law enforcement purposes, Zell said the Sheriff's Office could have used one of the county-owned all-terrain vehicles they use for searches.

Zell said the venue for the rodeo was the size of a football field and golf carts were unnecessary.

"Why in the world didn't they use a local golf cart instead of going all the way to Nahunta to get Kevin Barber's golf cart?" she asked. "There were plenty of golf carts at the rodeo. They didn't have to go out of the county to get one."

Well the truth usually follows after the smoke screen when the sheriff is involved. The golf cart was being picked up so that BTW could use it while riding in the subdivisions campaigning. This was not to be told though. You have to admit that using the cart at a rodeo is much better PR jargon than using the cart for campaigning. And get this, BTW went to Mariners Landing this morning and was standing at the entrance waving to the public as they were leaving for work. Tell me that he is not worried! Tommy did this a week ago. Never thought I would see this from BTW. Wonder if he will use a golf cart now since the "real story" is out? I bet he will not be caught in a cart now.
