Think about it. Imagine what the next four years would be like if Smith were re-elected; Berry were defeated; Rainer retained his seat; and Rhodes retained his seat and, of course, switched over to Smith's side.
Taj Mahal of new county jails? You betcha!
Brand new and more expensive cars - with unlimited use and "free" gas - for ALL CCSO employees? But, of course.
ALL county legislation having to meet Bill Smith's approval? Highly likely.
An emboldened Smith installing favorable candidates on city councils? Sure.
The man is a sociopathic, megalomaniacal, cancer-run-amok in the body politic of this county. Cut him out on July 15th!
Now, from a guy who was there (I was not - knew better from a past WWC forum), a somewhat different view of the event:
Talk about a waste of time. The forum should be labeled the "non forum". The questions asked the candidates for Sheriff were not related to any current events. Some three or four questions that were so soft it is impossible to remember what they were. Complaints were made to the lady who asked the questions and she responded that the committee had to approve the questions. That was impossible because, as it was pointed out, the questions were put in a bucket and then taken up front. To be polite, and not nasty, the damn idiot woman was a liar. There was no way a committee had any time to do any thing. It was worst than I had expected. The committee of one told one fellow that the questions were not factual. He told her it was reported in newspapers. She said that she didn't believe what she read. As if she would have understood. Another fellow told her she could have asked if he was being investigated even though every one knew the answer. Again, she said it was not "factual." It was rigged. The audience was given sheets of paper to write out the questions and I could see what she was reading from and the questions were all typed. I never saw a single hand written question. The only thing that was of any interest were two letters about Smith stalking a woman he had been having sex with years back when he was married. One was from an attorney wanting to sue him for getting the lady to spend money to move Jacksonville and the other was from her to Smith's employer Gilman Paper Company outlining the stalking. Those were being passed around. It was so ridiculous I can't begin to explain it. They really should have just passed out power puffs. The punch and cookies were okay. But not worth the trip to have your intelligence insulted. All you could take away from that was a pain in the butt sitting on hard chairs listening to soft punches, if any.
"Powder puff" is entirely consistent with my recollection of the WWC forum I attended at the Rec Center a while back. (Jay)
1708 HRS: And now, a follow-on observation from the same fellow as above:
The majority of the questions and time was taken up with the commission candidates. That was for a reason. Smith needs to get his folks in there. I can only tell you that the lateness of the report and the hour caused me to forget the most important and blatant abuse of the forum. About an hour on the commission candidates and no more than 10 minutes on the sheriff's race. The most interest was in the Sheriff and the forum was used to try and change the commission. Smith slipped up and made a reference to just that and it was reported. Sorry for not pointing out the most important point about the way the forum was slanted. It was not because they did not know what they were doing, it was because they did. It was a set up to topple commissioners

Smith would not even need Rhodes to control the commission because if Berry was not there, Carper would be and this is exactly what he is striving for. However I do not think he will succeed, sure hope not anyway. So glad that I forgot that the forum was last night. I would have been furious if I had been there. But, does not suprise me, probably most of those women in that club are recipients of the Sheriff's free give away trip to California. So, go figure?
You may be onto somehting, but I'm rather certain that the ladies are a bit too concerned about maintaining that famed, quintessential, DAR-esque, gentility of Southern Ladies.
Perhaps - dare I say it - they need a man, or a non-member gal from New York City, or Chicago, to ask the questions.
Here's an increasingly rare intelligentt comment lifted from TOPIX Kingsland:

The following in an insert from http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories...
"Smith said relations will improve if voters elect new commissioners who will be more cooperative with his office. He said all it will take is to have one new commissioner to tip the balance of power. He suggested it would be as simple as voting Commissioner Steve Berry from office and elect someone who will cooperate with incumbents David Rainer and Charlene Sears."
Smith also said representatives from his office need to be treated "with dignity and respect."
In other words Smith wants to stack the deck in his favor. Why am I not surprised. Simply amazing. Hey Einstein that's why we need some one who doesn't fall over themselves agreeing with your every word. It is called have a check and balance system. It's not a dictatorship.
Thanks Jay I will take that as a compliment since that comment was mine.
You're most welcome!
I consider myself a genteel Southern Lady and I can assure you that I would never need a man or some New York or Chicago gal to speak for me if I were asking the questions at that forum. When I said that most of those women had probably been to Saddleback, I know for a fact that some that belong to that club did take that trip. However, since I was not there to see who was asking the questions I don't know if she was one of them. However Billy Smith considers himself a ladies man and there are many who believe all the stuff he spouts. But,not all women are that naive. The first time I met him back in the early 80's I could see as plain as the nose on my face that his fading good looks were overshadowed by his outlandish EGO. That is why they were so easy on the questions for him. He is obviously their HERO and it was obvious their questions were pre-determined. Too bad, it could have been a good forum if they had asked the questions that were presented by the audience. OH WELL, he didn't change my mind or many others I have talked to today.
While I'll take your word for it that you are a Steel Magnolia, I'm afraid that the moderartors were more like Nerf Periwinkles.
He stated plainly that his department would have no problems "if" he could get back to having a majority on the county commission so that the county would go back to giving him whatever he asked for.
It would be rib eyes, tiki torches and blue bell ice cream and another 9.3 million spent a year as fast as you can say "hog farmer".
If you care anything about decent law enforcement, vote for Tommy Gregory.
Speaking of food, I would gladly contribute some of my meager funds to a celebratory public feast when Tommy is sworn in. Maybe an oyster roast - with tiki torches, steaks, and key lime cheesecake, of course.
Location(s)?
Way to go Moreno, a swearing in party for Tommy. Since you are now diabetic, I will personally make you a sugar free key lime cheesecake so you won't feel left out.
Why, thank you. Your genuine solicitousness for my health is very touching.
Have the swearing in party right in front of the jail.......
