BTW showed: Eagles' nest turned lions' den.

Showing once again that he is a sociopath with no sense of shame, Sheriff Bill Smith showed up at the candidates' forum, clearly expecting to be warmly received. Not. There was a standing-room-only crowd well before the 7:00 o'clock starting time. The crowd included about 25 to 30 CCSO employees - no doubt secretly curious to see what their soon-to-be-new-boss had to say. BTW's first clue that it was not going to be his night occurred in the minutes just before the thing started. "Ol' Bill Smith" was working the front row of voters, shaking hands and making small talk. Then he came to local attorney and member of The Cumberland three, Jim Stein. When Smith had the temerity to stick his hand out to Stein, Stein's response, in a voice clearly intended for the whole room to hear, was something along the lines of "Are you crazy? I'm not going to shake your hand - you tried to put me in jail!" Smith lamely professed that no, it was Ben Jenkins who had tried to have him put into jail. Stein's response was "You're a damned liar!" Smith made one more attempt to feign innocence in the plot against The Cumberland Three. Stein even more vehemently thundered again "You're a damned liar!!" Smith, clearly shaken, moved on. The night did not get any better for Big Thug Willie. The largely hostile audience, via written questions asked by moderator Ed Clary, peppered Smith with questions about his much publicized mis-and malfeasnace in office. He was asked if it was true that he hauled inmates to Charleston to do reovation work on his ex-wife's home. Smith's response: Yeah, but they all volunteered - and it was to modify the house to make it more accessible to his quadraplegic son, Blake. That was the first of several times that he was to bring up his "quadraplegic son." When questioned about why he did not fire Wesley Walker immediately, Smith retorted that the only thing Walker was guilty of was being Fairly Cisco's son-in-law and that the only reason he eventually fired him was because of "all that mess cooked up by the Georgia Times-Union." At one point in touting his recurrent theme that the GTU was the source of all of his problems, Smith invoked Gordon jackson's name and refverred to him as "that mudslinger." I'm confident that Gordon was in the audience. There were many more questions for Smith about the whole range of his now well known misdeeds. He, of course, had excuses for all of them. When asked about his repeated use of inmates' labor on private properties, Smith pointed out that there just happened (right!) to be two wheelchair-bound folks in the audience for whom the inmates had built wheelchair ramps. Both Tommy Gregory and Rich Gamble were there. Neither really attacked Smith directly. There was really no need as the audience was doing an excellent job of that for them. Curiously, at one point - in a seeming non sequiter - Smith blurted out that he had once fired an employee for "disloyalty" to him. Speculation is that he might have been taking a shot at Gregory. Oh, that reminds me: when asked if it was true that he had subjected those employees to "voice stress" test to see which ones had been talking to the GBI and FBI, Smith said that why, yes, he had, but only in an effort to make sure that said employees were telling the truth to investigators! Oh, please! My reporter tells me that the questions for the tax commissioner candidates were rather sparse. Beth Soles was on top of her game: Pat Smith, not so much. Any other eye-witness reports out there? Put them into comments. Oh, by the way, the T.V. Camden camera was there. Watch for it later this week on cable.

Here's another report (found on Topix Kingsland) this time from an eyewitness to, purportedly, the very same event.

I went to the forum this evening in St. Marys and they did hit Bill with some pretty tough questions about all the allegation being tossed around about him and I thought he did well with the answers. I'm sure some people believed his answers and some didn't just like always, He did say yes an inmate had gone to his ex-wives house in Charleston with him because the inmate was a plumber by trade and he hired him to put in a shower for his paralysed son. And yes the inmate was paid. He also admitted that the trustees had gone over to Cumberland Island to work, but not on private property, they were working at the Shepard house which is not illegal because of the Shepard house has 510-c classification, the drug money being used for college scholarships is not illegal as long as the recipient is studying for a degree in 1 of 3 majors that deal with police work. He did let Walker go because of the distraction him being there has become, Walker is yet to be charged or convicted of a crime so he didn't have to let him go. I think that is about it, I'm sorry if I left something out.
Tommy Gregory did fine as well, his answers seemed as rehearsed as Bill's did. Both of them just repeated what had been said before.
Beth Soles was very well prepared and spoke like she new her job and what was required of her. Her opponent not so much..
There was a state rep. there and his running mate, Chapman I think was his name, he wasn't impressive at all. His opponent was fiery..
Hope this helps you guys continue your dialog and battling back and forth.
I can't wait and see how distorted the Times union and the local fish wrapper make out to be tomarrow.

Church Lady, was that you?

Smith is the ultimate snake oil salesman. He can turn a felony into a misedemeanor with his slick talk. He is like the poll cats that use to sell gold mine property after salting the property with specks of gold. He tried to turn a cow patty into a glazed donut. Having your own cheering section always helps. Of course the employees had no choice. Smith blurted out he had fired one for being disloyal. The biggy was admitting that he had required employees who had spoke to the investigators to take voice stess test "to determine if they were telling the truth." Smith left out the work on his hog farm, girlfriends house and others going to S.C.

Your post is not all that accurate and more biased. The one from Topix is a better summary of events. I was sitting near Jim Stein and do not recall it being any big deal when Bill Smith tried to shake his hand. Bill was being cordial, Jim wasn't receptive. Jim did call him a liar; but the only ones who could have heard it would had to of been watching for the room was filled with talking and Jim did not say it very loud. Also, it did not seem to faze Bill. I personally liked when Bill said he had dismissed someone for being disloyal to him and it was obvious to me he was referring to Tommy because he looked at him right after he said it. I also felt the whole thing was rather tame. I had hoped for more drama. The questions could have been tougher.

I was reporting what was reported to me. Unfortunately, I could not get there to observe it myself.

However, I am proud to be biased against Smith. Any decent, even half-way intelligent Camdenian-American should be.
