Next Republican candidates' forum 0n 6/24.

On June 24, 2008 there will be a forum for the County Commissioners. The individuals qualified for those offices are: County Commissioner – District 1 Incumbent, Preston Rhodes Craig Black Willis Keene Jr. Barbara Rudolph King County Commissioner – District 3 Incumbent,Steve Berry Carla Carper County Commissioner – District 5 Incumbent, David Rainer Harry Callahan That will also be on a Tuesday night in the Eagles Aerie in St. Marys at 7:00 PM. Same format: written questions from the audience submittd to moderator, Ed Clary. By the way, although Camden Republican chair Marcie Parker's original announcement did not mention these two campaigns, I would assume that the candidates for Clerk of Superior Court Incumbent, Susan Waldron Tina Murray Denise Hanmpton-Taylor and the candidates for County Coroner Incumbent, L.W. Bruce John Meyers will be at this one too. Has anyone heard of a third Republican forum? It seems as though I remember reading a while back that the Woodbine Womens' Club was hosting a forum. Does anyone know if that has already occurred or when it might be, if not? Update: 1707 HRS. The Woodbine Woman's Club forum will be on the 14th. Thank you! I'll post this right away. Should get my van back tomorow. I'll try to get up there on the 14th. I have information for you about the Woodbine Woman's Club Political Forum. It will be held on June 14 at 6:30 in Woodbine at the Old School Cafeteria. All candidates are invited to participate and we generally have a large turnout and hopefully this year will be the same. I don't have the names of all who have accepted the invitation to attend but the response has been very positive from the candidates. If you have specific questions about the event, please let me know and thanks for mentioning it on your blog. Nisi Zell, Immediate Past President Woodbine Woman's Club Tell me something: is my memory correct that the Old School House is on the east side of Hwy 17 somewhere between the new courthouse and the river? Where do you turn off of Hwy 17?

Camden Sheriff Bill Smith responds to controversies in his department during forum
Posted: Wednesday, June 4th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
By GORDON JACKSON
The Times-Union
ST. MARYS — After refusing for almost a year to respond to controversies in his department, Camden County Sheriff Bill Smith defended his actions Tuesday nigh at a candidates’ forum.
The embattled sheriff said he took an inmate across state lines to work on his ex-wife’s house and required deputies to take voice stress tests last summer to determine their loyalty. Smith denied that inmates worked on private property on Cumberland Island.
Smith defended the trusty program when he was asked if he ever used inmate labor on private property.
“Yes they did,” he told the standing-room-only crowd at the Eagles Club in St. Marys.
Smith explained an inmate renovated a bathroom and built a handicap ramp at his ex-wife’s house in South Carolina. The inmate asked Smith to take him to South Carolina, Smith said, because he was a plumber and wanted to do something to help the sheriff’s son, Blake Smith, who is paralyzed from an auto accident.
“Trustees are people just like we are,” Smith said. “One individual, one person did that, and he was paid for it.”
Smith did not say how the inmate was paid, but public records show many inmates were paid for their work from an account containing money seized during the traffic stops of suspected drug dealers.
Smith did not address claims by former inmates that they worked on other private property, including building a house called The Ponderosa on a tract of land owned by the sheriff south of Woodbine.
Smith acknowledged conducting voice stress tests on deputies who may have been questioned by investigators last summer. Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents questioned deputies about the use of inmate labor and the operations of the Camden County Sheriff’s Office.
Smith said the tests were conducted to “verify their truthfulness.”
“The sheriff has the authority to get rid of you if he feels like you’re not being loyal to him or not being productive or not being sincere,” Smith said. “What we try to do is weed out the individuals who are troublemakers.”

Well if you want to see why JR, Jimmie Rollins did not run, take a close look at the legal section of today's T&G.

Thanks for confirming my fuzzy recollection of where the old school is.

Re: J.R.Rollins: See page 14B, far right-hand column.

Damn, there are a lot of foreclosures.

Jay Moreno said...

Thanks, Bob-Bob. How do you catch those stories so early? Does the GTU website have some kind of notification feature?

By the way, for any o fyou following the curent thread on Topix called "Political Forum 6/3/08," all wil become clear when you realize, as I have, that the poster calling himself "Southern Injustice" this week is actually none other than our old obeisant, toady friend and dyed in the wool-Thuggie, "Church Lady," AKA Marion Wall.

The "undecided" character is actually Sandy Feller.

I can not figure out why Sandy Feller is so busting Berry. They both voted 99% on the same issues when they were on the board together??? I think Sandy needs to look at his voting record while he was on the board. If he can distance himself from Comm Berry, he should tell us why, since they both seem to have the same agenda. But now Sandy is hell bent on Steve Berry being voted out. It just does not make me feel that Sandy has the pulse of the county.

Hey Jay

No early notification feature at all. Sometimes, around 5 or 6, they are setting up the newspaper for the next day. Just have to be there at the right time. I'm lucky I guess.

or you have to work for the paper, right?

RE: "or you have to work for the paper, right?"

I know the real "Bob-Bob" personally. His real name is Bob - not Gordon - and he does not work for the GTU.
