This morning's candidates' forum.

It went on for nearly two hours. All candidates acquited themselves fairly well. Well moderated, well attended. There was some nastiness in the form of flyers passed out, but I'll not dignify that any further. The low-down, dirty perps know who they are - and I have my strong suspicions.

In the state senate race, Carter and Ligon are fairly evenly matched in terms of demonstrated  innate intelligence and command of the issues.

In the state house race, in terms demonstrated  innate intelligence, the ranking is clearly, from most to least, Spencer, by a wide margin, followed by Howell and then Hill, who are not that far apart. Spencer knows all of the issues well, though his take on some are a little too far right for many voters. Howell is a little deficient on the issues (has no clear idea what either "zero based budgeting" or THE "Fair Tax" are, but is passionate about her pet issues).  Cecily Hill came across as a hybridization of Paula Deen and Gracie Allen.

Both of these races are going to be tough decisions: the senate because both candidates are good and fairly evenly matched; the house because I, for one, am not that crazy about any of them, but I'll vote for one.

Jay you crack me up!!!

I had the same thought....

Cecily Hill came across as a hybridization of Paula Deen and Gracie Allen.

I was there and thought it was run well. As far as agreeing with Moreno on the State Representative candidates, he is right on the money with Hill. She was very dizzy and doesn't seem to have a clue about really anything! Spencer had plenty of answers but they were so recited. It was obvious his group submitted the majority of questions. Not to sure about him, he seems to be tangled up with a bunch of wacked out people that are rude as arrogant. Howell had passion and answered the questions with sincerity and overall she did a great job. It was obvious that she would be there for the people. Seemed to be willing to discuss things further if anyone was interested. So I am going to follow up and find out more.
As for the Senate candidates, Ligon has compassion and seems very dedicated and level headed. Both have about the same opinion on issues. But Carter appears that he could be a lose cannon.
Maybe there should be another forum but if I were voting today, I would say Ligon and Howell!!!

Interesting points and well taken.

I agree that Spencer's followers - the vocal, obnoxious ones - are a dubious campaign asset. One, his brother, the Incredible Hulk, made good on his Topix threat to "introduce" himself today. Didn't ask the threatened question, though.

I could be interested in Spencer were he not so obsessively anti-government. He goes beyond traditional conservatism and a little to close to anarchy for my tastes.

Rindy clearly does not know the details of what "zero based budgeting" is. Nor does she really know what THE "Fair Tax" is. Suggestion to all candidates: Obtain and read the book "The Fair Tax" by Congressman John Linder.
Ignorance of facts is easily cured but lifelong attitudes are hard to change. The Howells as ardent, unionist, class warriors constantly looking for a way to thwart the largely imagined malignant designs of the "evil rich" upon Sidney six-packs bother me.

Neither unionists nor poor folks ever produced a job or signed a pay check. I have concerns that Rindy may not be pro-growth and pro-business. Camden desperately needs both.

This race will devolve down to the least bad of three poor choices, I'm afraid.

In the Carter / Ligon race, I don't think we would go to far wrong with either one. However, if Ligon stood quite still, I would swear he was a creation of Madam Toussaud. Sure Terry gets a little animated, but I rather like that. Then there's the attorney vs. businessman thing. I'm still undecided, but leaning Carter.

Amazingly, Cecily is the incumbent and she appears less knowledgeable than either candidate.

What does that really say?

Anonymous said...

*It says SO MUCH!

*It says someone should have been brave enough to jump in years ago.

*It says she should have never gone to Atlanta in the first place.

*It says she won and is there because she smiles and has been popular.

*It really says District 180 has been foolish!!!!

*It definately says we better make the difference by voting her OUT!

The only way to do that is for everyone to make sure anyone you know you make them aware of just what she hasn't done.

OK, fess up: are you from the Howell or Spencer camp?

Well Jay, it looks like you are going have to hold your nose and vote Adell James, the democrat.

Remember: Spencer, if elected, has the ear of teachers and most of them are not far right...and they have voted many officials in and of office in GA.

i really like Terry Carter. He is aggressive and really takes a stand. He has come up the hard way and seems to understand how tough things are now and expresses what he will do. Ligon is a nice fellow but does not get around to saying exacty what he will do. He states the issues. But we all know the issues. Plenty of folks can tell us what is wrong but few have a plan to remedy the problem.

Jay,

Do you think that Deb Hase actually wrote that or did someone make it up and try to make it seem like it came from her? I find it hard to believe that she would write something that distasteful. If someone forged it and put her name on it, he or she should be identified and, at the very least, made to apologize to Deb and the citizens.

Jay Moreno said...

No, she wrote it - and I agree with her. The people she was talking about work in concert with Bird and Howell. All are from the sour grapes crowd from the last city election and at least one is actually planning to run for one of the city council seats next year.

"No, she wrote it - and I agree with her."

Jay,

In that case. Deb Hase owes the citizens an apology. I did not think she would write a letter like that and let it become public knowledge. There seems to be a growing groundswell of people who question some of the decisions of the Council. Unfortunately, some of the Council members appear to have forgotten that the right to peacefully disagree with our lawmakers as an important part of our democracy.

It always amazes me how you continue to justify all Hase does. You are misreading the tea leaves on her. Her popularity is as low as it can get. Your continued support of her antics will cost you any chance of ever being elected. I am constantly asked what is the deal with you two. Normally you see things for what they are. She wrote the foolish statements. She insulted those who care to take issue with the council and it is for her to answer too. It is her fault for publishing the statements. Not those who are upset by the statements. She shouldn't put it in writing if it upsets her to have others review it. You can't prop her up on this one.

Jay Moreno said...

Granted, she was foolish to put that in writing in a format accessible to her political enemies, biut it does not detract a lick or a wit fromthe truth of what she said. I don't give a damn about popularity, only right and wrong.

Jay Moreno said...

No she doesn't. She was expressing her opinion - one with which I wholeheartedly agree. Those in the "amen corner" are all nuts of varying degrees of nuttiness.

Well screw you too. I attend almost every council meeting and often sit in the back row. Unlike you, I do not grab the mike at every meeting and make a dumb-ass remark just to hear myself talk. I just resent anyone that will disrespect my interest and concern for our city because I take the time to attend and participate and because of where I may sit.

It is great that we have the priviledge agreeing or disagreeing with others. Especially those who represent us. One would expect that would be respected. For Hase it was not. But that does not matter when it comes to Hase because irresponsible people are held to a different standard than responsible people. For certain Jay you will stand with her until she has completly shot her entire foot off. I respect your right to be just as mislead as you choose to be. You have the priviledge to continue on that path and that is the rights we have.

Jay Moreno said...

If Councilwoman Hase had made,or makes, any attempt whatsoever to stiffle public comment, then I would be the first to criticize her. However, she has not done that. She has merely expressed her opinion. One does not give up that right upon being elected.

"She has merely expressed her opinion. One does not give up that right upon being elected."

Jay,

I agree that an elected official retains the right to a personal opinion. But when that elected official expresses their opinion via a city e-mail address to another city official, it becomes a public opinion. When the message purports to represent the position of a majority of the Council and when the purpose of the message is to plant a preconception of the irrelevancy of the opinions of selected group, personal opinion has morphed into a disgusting and politically dangerous blunder.

Do not continue to make the mistake of blaming the messengers for the message. Deb Hase wrote this and she is wholly and solely responsible. Those who made it public should not be demonized, no matter their motives. Deb Hase continues to be a loose cannon on the council. This is not her first embarrassing e-mail, nor, I'm afraid, will it be her last. Perhaps, if all of her official correspondence was made public, she would be forced to think twice before sending off an e-mail that appears to grant her private opinion the power of public policy.

The hell she didn't make an attempt to shut up folks. She made the dumb remark about "nay sayers". That was a shot at the citizens who may or may not take issue with the antics at the coucil meetings.

There is no way you can sell this crap as chocolate candy. She wants to shut them up and embarassment was her intent. Any one who claims to be as smart as you realizes just what it was.

Thye bitten dogs always bark the loudest. I'm just well aware of the true motives of the "messengers" who are feigning great umbrage for political advantage. The race for city council seats has been well under way since the day after the last election. All of this bogus umbrage is just part of it.

True though it may be, it does not diminish the joy of seeing Deb Hase hoist with her own petard.

Jay Moreno said...

Thus, my case was made.

By the way, it should read "hoisted upon her own petard."

"By the way, it should read "hoisted upon her own petard.""

The meaning of this phrase is to be injured by the device that you intended to use to injure others.

The first use of this quote was by Shakespeare in Hamlet, "For tis the sport to have the enginer Hoist with his owne petar" Engineers were originally constructors of military engines. A petard (petar, petardo) was a military device, filled with gunpowder, meant to blow a hole in or breach a fortified wall. Hoist was to lift up.

Although there are several variations of this quote in use, the most historically correct is "hoist with one's own petard."

Come on Jay, don't give up just because you were wrong. Many people don't even know what a petard is.

Don't be an ass. I was exactly right, as you well know.
