Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all. This should be an interesting year. How will President Obama deal with Afghanistan and Iran? Will Obamacare pass? Will the recovery accelerate or continue to limp along? Will the other 99% of St. Marians benefit from a new mayor and council? Will the JDA land any new businesses? Will the Green eco-weenies do everything possible to prevent the new business locating here? Will the Green eco-weenies continue to pursue political influence locally? Who will be elected Tuesday night as the new chair of the CCBOC (Chip Keene would have my vote)? How will incumbent commissioners Sears and Zell fare in this year's elections? Who will be elected the next mayor of Woodbine? Will Fairley Cisco go to federal prison? Will BTW go to federal prison? Will real estate recover in Camden? Will Cumberland Harbour and the old mill site get new, well-funded developers? Will the proposed new airport ever come to fruition? Will the north end get a water/sewer system? Will Sheriff Gregory get more jail cells? Will a federal judge shut the current jail down? Will Doug Vaught get a pair of long pants? Will aliens mistake the Howard Gilman Memorial Park for an intergalactic LZ? Feel free to continue with your own questions in the comments section.

1.) Will send more troops but not enough, nor enough resources. Will not listen to proper advisors, if he has any who know what they are talking about.
2.) Continue to limp along.
3.) Hard one, it’s going to be interesting.
4.) Doubt it or if they do it will be marginal.
5.) Absolutely
6.) Absolutely
7.) Chip would get my vote.
8.) Already heard from Sears she will not be running. Hopefully we will get rid of Zell. Needed: Two educated, level headed, conservative people who have the qualifications to be elected and serve.
9.) Interesting one, greatest fear is Pat Kelley. Former councilwoman, co-owner of Kelley’s Towing. I have suspected by her decisions and actions for years she is Bi-Polar (not a joke). The woman has issues.
10.) Yes!! Hopefully it will be soon.
11.) One of my biggest wishes for the New Year. Still holding out on the hope that the Feds are working on an iron clan case and keeping it extremely quite to not jeopardize it.
12.) Will see small progress but only in the low to mid range real estate.
13.) Doubtful, but hopeful. That is where it’s really going to be interesting with the new council & mayor. It’s possible but would require loads of work, progressive action and a mixture of some luck.
14.) Again, another hard call. I’m in favor of moving it to the site north of Woodbine. Camden County as a whole need to look north of the Laural Island line. The north end is filled with the natural resources for future assets. This would require loads of work from the commissioners and the JDA. I agree with your ideas for the use of the current airport location.
15.) Doubt it due to funding. However, it would be an awesome investment for the county down the road. Just don’t know how long that road is.

16.) I would like to see the sub station in St. Mary’s be remodeled interiorly. A lot of what you need is already there. Add cells to the old 911 area and add cells to office areas. I know one argument would be staffing but if a new pod is added to the current jail more staffing is going to be needed anyway. Tommy said it wouldn’t in the paper but the truth is more staffing is needed now with the current space. An additional pod being built like he has recommended will require more staffing, that is a fact he just won’t admit or hasn’t thought it through. This would be a lower cost to the tax payers for only a temporary fix though. What is needed is a completely new facility located on a large area of land, so there can be future growth space. The current jail could be remodeled and used for office and storage space. Bill Smith screwed the citizens of this county in many ways and this is only one of them. We have needed a new jail for 10 plus years. He knew we needed a new jail, I have no doubt. But pushing the issue with the commissioners would not have been popular with the voters, so he acted as if nothing was wrong. Thinking of what all that seized money could of built years ago but was spent irresponsibly by this man makes me want to puke. I am disappointed by Tommy. He should never have been so vocal about possible law suits. This is like waving a flag to the Feds. Talk to some of the people in the know in Charlton and Brantley Counties and they will be able to tell you first hand how difficult a situation that puts you in. The Feds mean business, they will enforce expansion to their specifications and will stick around for a long while. The Feds don’t donate funding. It would be an already broke Camden County footing the whole bill with little to no input.
17.) Don’t know him. No opinion.
18.) Highly likely! It would bring grand media exposure to downtown St. Mary’s. The merchants would make a killing!

Jay, I enjoy your blog. I get your humor and enjoy reading commentaries of your daily life. (I am a huge Seinfeld fan, meaning there is so much humor in day to day nothings). My all time favorite was the trip to Wal-mart with the WIC customer. I don’t agree with all of your opinions but I agree probably about 85%. No one can always agree about everything. Would love to introduce myself. I’ve seen you twice in restaurants, but one day the timing will be right. Have a Happy New Year!

*I decided to send it in two links. Afraid it was too long.

I heard that same thing about Charleen possibly not running at the CCBOC meeting Tuesday night. Interestingly, Charlene performed better than I've ever seen her perform before. On the jail issue, she went toe-to-toe with Berry, like a destroyer lighting into a battleship. Truth be known, she has
improved steadily since coming out from under Svengali Smith's evil influence.

I assume you know by know that after a titanic battle, the CCBOC Tueday night, in a 3 to 2 vote, gave Sheriff Gregory his pod on the square.

As to Smith and the jail: building a new jail would not have been near the fun or self-aggrandizement and vote securing as the things he actually did with the money.

By all means, introduce yourself. Hell, pull up chair and join me.
