Would you believe SIX YEAR TERMS for JDA Board of Directors??

In response to a question posed earlier today by a reader, I e-mailed Camden County Administrator Steve Howard to inquire about the terms. Just woke up from a nap a few minutes ago. Called Steve per his e-mailed request and caught him on the road. Reception was not all that good so I settled for just the terms and expirations of the three board members nominated and elected by the Camden County Board of Commissioners. I frankly was not all that interested in the representatives from the three cities because, A, the cities do not pay a penny in support of the JDA, and B, from what I hear, their appointed (by the city councils) reps rarely show up at JDA board meetings anyway. I assume the city reps are re-appointed for staggered six-year terms as well, but not sure. I will leave it for less-than-happy-with-the-JDA citizen activists in each city to check into that and report back to us, if you would. Here is the link to the world-class JDA website if you want to find out who the cities' reps are. http://www.camdenjda.com/ The county commission that set this thing up, in their "wisdom" (more likely, their desire not to be bothered with it all that often), established not only six year terms, but staggered six-year terms. Here they are: John McDill, Chairman - term expires June 30, 2010; Pat Brown, Vice Chairman - term expires June 30, 2011; Stan Fowler, Executive Committee - term expires June 30, 2014. It seems to me that the only way to effect serious change at the JDA in a timely fashion is to totally defund them in next year's budget, then, if a study shows that it would be better to retain a JDA, as opposed to bringing it in-house under the county administrator, have the BOC TELL the JDA, in no uncertain terms, what changes they WILL make to their charter and mission statement (and DE FACTO mission) before they will be re-funded. Of course, there is absolutely no chance of that happening unless the two members of the BOC who come up for re-election in 2010, Sears and Zell, either have a drastic change of voting patterns, or are replaced by challengers who have had enough of the JDA status quo. P.S., I know Stan Fowler, CPA is the Fowler in Fowler and Maxwell, CPAs. He's my CPA as of tax year 2008. I'm 99.9% sure John McDill is the top dog for Georgia Power in these parts (which burns more electricity, a few businesses or thousands of residences?). I have no idea what Pat Brown does. Anyone? Update, Saturday, 1/24 @ 0955 HRS. A source has e-mailed me that Pat Brown, the husband of Camden County State Farm agent Jane Brown, is retired. However, they did not know what he is retired from. Anyone?

if memory serves me right the BOC entered into an agreement with JDA to fund them at some lavish amount (100.000.00? per yr) for several years. check with steve as to amount and duration. i recall voting against it. however, this was some time ago. up to that agreement the BOC funded them from year to year. aside from meeting every two months the members had very little to with the decisions/ when sm was considering re apointing a member I pointed out that the person involved hade missed 95% of meeings they didn't care and reappointed him anyhow. therein lies the problem.

The County should abolish the JDA. That's the ONLY way to relieve ourselves of this MADNESS. Six year terms..... What a joke! So how many six year terms has Pat Brown and John McDill served? Please name ONE accomplishment of this lame group.

So Stan Fowler is no longer the accountant but on the executive board. Must be really hard to sever ties when you know where and how much the deposit was for.

Lets all work to vote Jay Moreno in! I believe this is a winning topic. Jay will you run on the platform of revamping or abolishing the JDA?

If Charlene Sears continues to give lip service about the JDA being fruitless but votes for them to continue as usual. I say we replace her with Jay Moreno. The same sentiment goes for Nisi Blount. You can either do whats in the best interest of taxpayers or be replaced!

It seems like I heard more names than the ones you mention.

Again, go to the world-class JDA website for a complete listing of all nine memebers - 3 for the county and two from each of the three municipalities.

Should I take the decision to run for District 4, one of my top priorities would be put into place the most efficacious plan - JDA or in house - for actually, vigorously pursuing new industry - including clean, light manufacturing, warehousing/distribution, transportation, etc. - for the commuting citizens and the marginally locally employed citizens of this county. I also think that we need to take a serious look at whether or not we want to get in on the ground floor of the cellulosic ethanol industry.

Is there a way that you can insert this on the home page to remain until you decide.

Camden County representative:
John McDill (Chairman)
Pat Brown (Vice Chairman)
Stan Fowler (Executive Committe)

City of Kingsland representatives:
Jimmy McCollum (Executive Committee)
Roger Tyo

City of Woodbine representatives:
George Hannaford
Louise Mitchell

City of St. Marys representatives:
Tom Turner
Gary Willis (Sec/Treasurer)

Roger Tyo and Gary Willis are the only two listed that were not original board member. I remember when Gary Willis begged to become a member. The remainder have served since the boards existence. Why is this?

George Hannaford has to be 100 years old.

I was told if the taxpayers could give these guys: John McDill, Pat Brown, Stan Fowler, Jimmy McCollum and Gary Willis some truth serum it would literally make your head spin off.

They actually project themselves as men of integrity in the community.

When - and if - I take the final decision to run, I will start a new blog - or website - devoted entirely to the campaign. I will continue Camden Commentary with a link on it to the official campaign site.

Regarding the JDA board members, while I certainly question their collective enthusiasm for actually bringing new, well paid jobs to Camden, I've seen no reason to question their personal integrity, particularly as regards the JDA.

John McDill is also retired.
