St. Marys "Tea Party" a 6:00 PM tonight.

Watch Dog Saint Marys, GA Reply » Report Abuse Judge it! #1 2 hrs ago For those of you who have not gone to camdencountymaps.com and determined what your new St. Marys tax assessment is going to be, be sure you have a change of under wear. You are going to be shocked into reality. I have been advised there is a meeting tonight at the English Pub on 40 in St. Marys across from Sam Pickrens. The meeting is to be at 6 p.m. The purpose is to show the tax payers what they have to do. If you don't care don't come. If you don't mind taxation without representation don't come. If you have more money than sense don't come.If you are tired of being screwed over by the tax and spend politicians and their hired tax assessors you should be there to organize. Remember TAD. That was a tax plan tanked. This can be the same if you care enough to have a TEA PARTY. This should be interesting. Update @ 7:22 PM: Your humble reporter has just returned from the meeting. It ran for about 55 minutes. It was attended by 50 people. As you no doubt knew, Doug Vaught was the MC. The featured presenters were attorneys Bert Guy and Jim Stein as well as local mortgage broker, Tom Cyphers. Also in attendance were Mayor Eskridge and Councilmen Bird and Johnson. Former Mayor and Mrs. Jerry Brandon were there. Sandy Feller was there - and much to my surprise, he not only did not put the event together but did not say a word. The gal who replaced Dave Smith was there for K-Bay as were Emily Goodson for the T&G and Gordon Jackson for the GTU. Some real estate investor who has helped raise rates by buying 48 properties in town was there. "Winston" somebody. Of course, Teddy Lockhart was there. As was Rosemary Rillo. Frank Saffold was there. So were the Doninis and Jay Lassiter. That Barbara somebody or other who publishes a magazine in town was there - naturally. Apparently, the organizer of this thing was Rindy (Mrs. Sidney) Howell. There was some good info passed out. If you have not filed for homestead exemption (regardless of your age) it is imperative that you do so NLT April 1st. I knew that. if you have filed already but have subsequently turned 62, you should call the tax assessors office and make damned sure they have picked up on that fact in order to insure that you get your $25,000 property tax exemption at 62 and older. Moreover, you need to check in with them again at age 65 to make sure that you are no longer billed for ANY taxes from the school board. I knew that. However, here is something I DID NOT KNOW. If you want to preserve your right to contest your next tax bill it is IMPERATIVE that you fill out and file a "Taxpayer's Return of Real Property" NLT April 1, 2009, and every year thereafter. This form is your opportunity to tell the tax assessors what YOU think your property is worth. Apparently, in past years, the county did not enforce the law requiring you to have filed this by April I. Now, they DO. I will scan a copy here in a minute. Hold it: way better yet, here is the site where you can go to type in the tax return, then print it and take it to Woodbine:
http://www.etax.dor.ga.gov/ptd/adm/forms/pt50r/index.aspx There will be another meeting of this group on next Monday, at 6:00 at the same place. It does in fact appear to be worth your time if you are a property owner. By the way, Mayor Eskridge stood up and said - as usual, in his barely audible voice - that it is his intention to introduce a city council resolution to apply the city's millage rate to the assesses valued that were extant in 2006. Interesting concept, but it sounds highly dubious in terms of legality. I'll believe it when I see it take effect.

B-Bob, I had that same experience. I sent an e-mail off last night to the real person I believe to be "Watch Dog" for clarification. No respsonse yet. However, I beleive what they are all referring to is the maps from over on the Camden County, GA website. The good news is that I found those. The bad news is I'm not able to get those to "work" either.

Hopefully, Rindy Howell or someone who spoke about the need to consult this "map" will come on here and give us all some badly needed clarification.

By the way, my closing was on December 1st but, so far, I can find no listing of my owning property in Camden County.

Jay what is that two story building (being built) across from the meeting site?

I noticed that the four out chasing around trying to come up with 3.5 million for an air port located out of St. Marys on property of developers were not concerned enought to show their butts up for the meeting. I would thing a more worth while venture would be to take on the task of tax relief not tax spending. It is just amazing to me that the prorities are so wrong. All governent suxs.

I was able to locate all the property in St. Marys on the site. It is camdencountymap.com. You can also go to the Camden County web site and find it. Keep trying. It is there.

If you are using the link off of Topix, it is the wrong URL, here is the correct one.

http://www.camdencountymaps.com/

There is a little software download you need to make it work, but it is on the site. That should help you out.

The two story building that the commenter asked about is the new St. Marys Elementary School, which, incidentally, is being built entirely with funds collected from the last ESPLOST we all voted for. How soon we forget.

One of the projects to be funded by thje proposed new ESPLOST, which I will vote for _ is to tear down the old St. Marys Elementary -on the south end of that same tract - and replace it with what I understand is to be a combination school playground an after-school hours-park for the general public.

I was referring to the other two story building before you get to the school.

Jay you have a forum and I hope that you will do all you can to get folks to assist the tax payers in St. Marys who are being taxed out of their properties. If there is ever a time for folks to do the right thing it is now. This can happen to others in this county and all need to be concerned. This is an injustice that needs to challenged and it is for benefit of all of Camden County. It takes some effort to do what is right and you can do what is wrong my making no effort. Monday night is a chance to show that there are folks who not completly selfish. That there are stand up citizens who do care. That this will be called to task. As we all know to have the opportunity to do what is right and not is just as wrong as what is happening.

An increase of 700 or 800% in assessed value (which looks like what happened to marshfront and waterfront property)is ridiculous, it increase people's taxes to the point where it would take half or more of their annual income just to pay the property taxes. It is like saying that ordinary folks who have been in their homes for years now must sell their homes and move to somewhere more befitting their middle class station.

And someone is hoping to pick up some prime property cheap and make a killing when the market rebounds. Because the people behind this reassessment know that no one could sell their property at these inflated prices in this market. This is confiscatory taxation and should be disgusting to everyone.

Reassess at the time of sale, not all at once out of the blue the way this was done.

Who are the elected officials behind this? We should start applying pressure and working to defeat them in the next election. Maybe we should mail teabags to the tax assessor, or throw some (teabags, not officials :)off the dock after the next meeting on Monday.

Not to take away from the seriousness and the unfairness of the situation, but I can't help but take note of the fact that some of the loudest yelping dogs who have been bitten the hardest were downtown merchants, Realtors and real estate investors who were right in the thick of touting St. Marys as the in place for well healed retirees to move to and bring their disposable income. Remember the ballyhoo over the magazine article (was it "Fortune?" - I forget) the BH&G TV home, etc, etc.

Their would-be goose that was going to lay the golden eggs is now biting them in the ass.

Careful what you wish for.
