Bait stew has altogether new recipe!

It would appear at this point that either Tommy will get a bait shop at the other downtown boat ramp on Meeting Street and the yachtsmen will get the existing bait shop, or, Tommy will get the existing bait shop and the city will build a new facility for the yachtsmen, or, Tommy will get a facility on the dock with floating bait boxes and the yachtsmen will get the original bait shop. Or, this being election season, who-the-hell knows? Most importantly, the plan least likely to cost the incumbents votes will surely be adopted. http://camdencommentary.blogspot.com/2009/09/bait-stew-thickens.html

A word of explanation. "Anonymous" somehow posted this comment twice. When I wnet to my commnet moderation screen, I checked off one of them and hit delete. My intention was to publish the other one, but dmaned if it didn't delete both of them. Fortunately, all comments are sent to my e-mail account as well, so I've copied it and posted it under my name. BY the way, if someone lies and tells me that they've sent a comment and I must have deleted it, it is quite easy to tell you are lying by checking my e-mail.

Okay, here it is:

if i were tommy and they changed the building i would think they need to sit down with him and talk.
i know tommy, fished with him many times and he loves that river and helps any one that is fishing out.
i have been with him twice that we towed a boat back. the city will have lost a good hearted fisherman if they let him go and several of US captains will back him 100%.
this is what is going to happen.they are going to try to put tommy on a 10x10 shack on the dock to sell live bait only.give the building to smyc to sell frozenbait, drinks, tackle, snacks, ect
no baitshop can make it with live bait only. that is where they hope to break even. the profit is in the other stuff iknow this im a captain also for past 11yrs

Wow Jay,

After reading all the information you posted, I do not know where to start, so bear with me. A Bait Shop closer to the water at the St. Marys boat ramp?? Where do they want it, in the water?? A bait shop at the Meeting St. ramp is a dumb idea, and a waste of money. We have a bait shop in town, and I am for free enterprise. Let Donkey Reef, I think that is the name, have a go at it. Have a bait shop in the current location of the bait shop at the St. Marys waterfront. Let them sell bait, sodas, ice, tackle, and whatever else to suceed. Most of the fisherman going out of the Meeting St. ramp already have bait that they caught, or bought, so no need for anything there. I think if the Saint Mary's YC needs a facility, build it on there own dime. They can charge for maps of the town, rent golf carts, charge for WiFi, ect. They sound like they want to be a business but do not want to pay for the start up costs. I found it interseting that the photo of all the boats docked in St. Marys was taking on Thanksgiving when we have a well established event for boaters that was implemented before the SMYC showed up. Have them take a picture on a Tuesday in March, and lets see how full the Harbor is. I am not a local, I moved here 9 years ago. Up north, but below the Mason-Dixon line, if an town wanted to put a new traffic light in, they paid someone to sit there and count cars for a week. I think that is what St. Marys should do, pay someone minimum wage to count boats coming in on a non holiday week or two, and see what the real need is. Hell, I will do it for $5/hr. The St. Marys mind thought just blows my mine, is there anyone in this city that has a rational thought?? Crazy!!

Not a problem - and welcome aboard!

Trust me, I am not advocating all things good come from the north, that is why I moved here. But I think you get my drift about doing a count. My guess would be no more then 5 transiant (sp) boats a week tops. Yes, Thanksgiving is another thing, but do we really need to spend taxpayers money on 5 boats a week that carry 2-3 people. I don't think so.

Yes, but one of the St. MYC's stated objectivers is to pull in yachts off the ICW via radio to increase that number. Of course, if they succeed, during the next election cycle, they will be asking the city to build more docks and install more mooring buoys. They will , of course, have the unqualified support of the DMA, always ready to profit from the expenditure of OPM.

Jay,

I understand your thought process on this one. Let me throw a curve at you, not knocking you but just another point of view. I think we all can agree that Old Town Fernandina is much nicer than downtown St. Marys. Many more shops and places to eat, and very well laid out. Lots of choices for food varity and such.(SMYC used Fernandina as an example in there RFP or bid that you so kindly posted here) So I see the current situation as someone (SMYC) standing in front of a Ruth Chris with a megaphone asking people to travel 5 miles more inland to stop at McDonald's. I just do not see that happening, and it seems to me St. Marys is putting there bucks on what could be, but not what is real. I just don't get it. BTW how many of the SMYC owners, actually own a big ole boat???
