It certainly is a novel and risky idea in St. Marys, GA. It makes me wonder exactly what demographic the candidate is playing to. The outcome should be interesting.

This is also the candidate who is, in part, running on a platform of wanting to allow open alcohol consumption at St. Marys festivals. Won't that be fun for the kids?

If true, that's very interesting. That will wipe out nearly all of her advantage from being a past president of our most active PAC, the St. Marys Kiwanis Club.

Since when is it against the law for an adult to choose to drink? I am attending the "fundraiser" tomorrow night. The money is for the campaign, not the liquor store. This is an adult function with transportation provided if needed by the organizers. The navy league dinner is tomorrow night too. Would you like to guess how many drinks will be poured there?
Gee, thanks for clarifying that for us. So, it turns out that it is actually a fund raiser and the $20.00 goes tot he candidate, not the liquor store or the bar. Imagine that.
No, it is not against the law. It's just a very dicey political move in this town.
By the way, I don't recall seeing the Navy League qualify as a candidate. Did I miss that? So, what was your point in throwing in that apparently utterly superfluous tidbit of information?

Ms Haney is perfectly within her rights to both enjoy a drink herself and to hold a campaign fund-raiser.
As is evidenced by my initial comment, I do question the "open alcohol during festivals" issue as being a major leg of her "platform" in this election - but that's just my opinion.
If drinking were a crime in St. Marys a good 90% of the citizens would be run out of town.
Let's try to be rational, people.
I want to talk to Ms. Haney so I stopped by The Island and Seagles tonight. She was not there. After leaving her 60hour a week job Maybe she was home with her husband and four children or doing the civic work she is known for.
What civic work is she known for - for the benefit of those of us who had never heard of her before she qualified?
I know drinking is not a crime as dfo all of the folks who are dead set against it. I was simply observing that itr struck me as an extremely risky poliitcal move in St. Marys.
Certain ministers will see this as an opportunity for publicity and a chance to make the collection plate heavier. You may recall, if you were here, that former councilman Sydney Howell was installed in office the first time almost entirely on the support of Rev. Jim and the congregation at Agape on a platform of cracking down on after hours alcohol sales and attempting to thwart all alcohol licenses.

I happen to know the candidate very well. I have never heard anything about alcohol consumption at festivals. Only a mention of alcohol at special events with a permit. There is a difference. Typical St. Marys.

Really? The "difference" escapes me. What is a festival in downtown St. Marys if not "a special event with a permit?"
Could you site an example of a special event outdoors with alcohol that would noty be a festival and if so, could you explain why it would not be a difference with absolutely no meaning vis-a-vis the alcohol consumption?

So long as we no longer have one who comes to the meetings directly from the corner bar stool at Seagles and offers the prayer with Bud breath, what they do on their own time does not concern me.
I believe the poster is referring to the Kingfish Tournament. This is a special permitted event that is not sponsored by a civic club and is not a family event. The problems this and other groups are subjected too proves we are not interested in promoting special events. When adults of legal age are subjected to police making sure they don't cross the magic line this makes us look ridiculous.
I was not aware that the Kingfish Festival was not a family event.

what fishing tournament does not have "youth"anglers and "ladies".

i missed it somewhere in the rules of ska not to bring wife and kids.
this year alone my wife and 2 boys fished 3 tournaments with myself and my brother in-law.and both families were at weigh in.

We do allow alcohol consumption at the kingfish tournament. Behind a line. A local civic club sells the beer. They obtain a city license. Wow, a civic club selling beer downtown, out in the open, but a tax paying license holding restaurant can't? I have lived here for years and until about 2 years ago it was understood one could walk around with a plastic cup at events and no one cared as long as everyone acted right.
