Glynn County's airport just received $6 million from the FAA funds from Congress $787 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Advance planning is why McKinnon and the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport are in the midst of a $10 million capital improvement program - at no expense to Glynn County's general taxpayers.

Another priority at Brunswick Golden Isles Airport is replacement of the 60 year old drainage system. Corrugated metal pipes are failing, and the whole system is sagging. That project should begin late this summer with the FAA paying approximately $3.3 million of the estimated $3.5 million total cost and the Airport Commission and state splitting the remainder.

Finally, Brunswick airport's 20-year master plan for growing the airport will soon launch with construction of taxiways, roads, lighting, drainage, retention pond, and security fence needed before much needed hangars can be built. The Airport Commission is seeking $2.5 million in stimulus funds to finance the first phase and, if successful, will break ground in late fall.

"These projects will help their local economy and put citizens to work, which is exactly what is needed during these difficult times."

If I'm not mistaken, there are actual commercial flights in and out of Glynn County's airport.

I think McKinnon is pretty much for hobbyists and a few business planes, but, unlike St. Marys, they have sufficient volume to justify - and finance - their existence.
