Found on Sandy Feller's blog:

Comment by Priceless It was brought to the public attention in Woodbine that David Rainer pays a whooping $4.75 for his property taxes. All Rainer could say “I pay whatever the bill says that I owe” Teed Off wouldn’t you like to have a deal like that. What does that say for the Tax Commissioner and how many others receive such a sweetheart deal. You’re right we must vote them all out in July. Anyone who knows the law knows that the Tax Commissioner does not set the value on property. Call the Tax Assessors Office, that is where the values are placed. The Tax Commissioner has nothing to do with that. Call them and quesiton why the taxes were so cheap. I know that my fathers taxes are around $6.00 because he is a senior citizen, maybe that has something to do with it. Call them and find out before making statements that may not be true. That is what is wrong with all of theese sites, there are not facts.

Excuse me, but I published it, second hand, for the express purpose of finding out whether or not it was true and why.

Can anyone who was at the candidates' forum in Woodbine verify that such a question was aksed and that Rainer actually made such a statement?

Yes,I did happen to attend the forum and the question was asked. I believe he said that he didnt know, that whatever the bill was is what he paid, but he also said that he paid $1500.00 on a different piece of property that he owns. Maybe you should call the Tax Commissioner tomorrow and find out for us.

I happened to be at the forum. Rainer did make that statement that he didnt know what he paid, that whatever the bill was is what he paid, he also said that he paid $1500.00 on another piece of property he owns. So I would assume that he gets that exeption that the senior citizens get. Jay, maybe you can call the Tax Commissioner tomorrow and find out for us.

I was. It was. He did.
I also did not view the setting or process quit as bad as was reported by your friend. Really hard to provide questions to 19 different people. Would not really describe the questions or the people as soft. Probably would be more effective if the forum had a smaller number of candidates. You might consider some praise for the efforts put forth by involved and interested citizens. Don't think we have to many of these opportunities throughout the campaign.

Jay,
The Rainers own two pieces of property in Kingsland: Williams and Chester (about two block from each other). The assessment is about average for the homes in that area (older homes with no improvements). However, when i lived in Kingsland, my home was assessed three times while some of my neighbors homes were not reassessed at all. Either people called in chips that were due or the tax assessors are extremely lazy and dishonest.

So, even though I want Mr. Rainer to be voted out of office, it looks exceedingly unlikely that he actually paid only 4 dollars and change on his property tax.

Give 'em hell - but honest hell, folks.

Woodbine,

If the dear ladies arer not up to a hard hitting, informative inquiry of the candidates, perhaps they should stick to beutifying Woodbine.

I called the Tax Commissioners Office this morning and checked the amount of all the candidates taxes. Harry Callahan and David Rainer did not pay anything, on the homesteaded properties they own. When asked to explain why, it was because of the senior citizens exemption of 25,000 and the additional exemption that the state gives senior citizens. There are many people which qualify for the same exemptions. It is not based on income just age. However, Mr. Rainer did pay $1100.00 for the other property he owns.

thahnks for checking with the tax commissioner's office. I've been out all morning with a doctor's appointment, filling Rxs and my ocnce-a-week vegetable feed at Aunt B's. You saved me the trouble. So, Raikner did indeed pay little or nothing on the house where hje lives, but it was all perfectly legal. I suspectdd as much.

I'll be buying a house soon (yes, according to some local "political theorists," I'll finally have the right to express a political opinion - hell, maybe even vote!) That's good to know. The age threshold for the $25,000 homestead exemption is 62, right?
